In most modern poker games, the blind is a forced bet. It is placed before the cards are dealt and the turn to bet passes from player to player. For instance, in stud poker, a player who has a pair of jacks and a pair of queens would be required to place a “blind” bet.

A “straight” is a hand that contains five cards of the same rank. In some poker games, the highest-ranking card is the kicker. Likewise, the lowest-ranking card is the ace.

While a standard deck of 52 cards is used in most modern forms of the game, the amount of cards depends on the type of poker being played. Cards may be dealt face-down, or face-up, in a series of rounds. Card denominations are typically green or red and the chips are generally white. Several variations of the game also allow players to use wild cards to improvise a hand.

Some variants of poker allow players to take new cards from the top of the deck, or from the deck that has been shuffled. These variations are sometimes called “short-pack” games.
